Dance program director Saskia Harmon reveals what’s coming to ROOTS in the upcoming season

The 2018-2019 season is just around the corner at ROOTS Academy, and while the kids are still deep in the middle of summer fun, we’ve been busy getting ready for what’s shaping up to be our biggest year yet!

During the past several years, ROOTS has been growing at an incredible pace, and we would love for you to be a part of our next chapter. Be sure to enroll now!

Our brand new dance program director Saskia Harmon said there are some exciting additions coming to our acclaimed Dance Academy in the form of new mentors, new classes, and new programs.

“There’s a lot of change coming for us this fall,” she said. “We’re super pumped, and this year is going to be incredible.”

You can learn more about Saskia here, and take a look at some of what we’ve got in store below.

Meet Our New Mentors

We’re thrilled to have lots of new faces to teach our dancers, and we know they’re going to help us take our students to the next level.

Each of the new mentors have extensive experience in the dance world, and some of their former students have gone on to attend professional dance programs at The School of American Ballet, Julliard, and more.

Our new mentors include:

Geralyn Garner (Company Ballet)

Vivienne Heskje (Ballet, Hip Hop, Combo, Preschool)

Mary Beth Jackson (Ballet)

Maria Logan (Musical Theatre, Tap)

Jillian Lovins (Jazz, Lyrical)

Please welcome them when you see them!

Check Out Our New Classes

We’re always thinking of fresh and innovative ways to educate and interact with our students, and we’re excited to introduce two new classes that will challenge them in a whole new way. These aren’t your ordinary dance classes!

Musical Theatre

Does your child have dreams of starring on Broadway? We’ve got just the thing.

There’s been a lot of demand for musical theatre instruction at ROOTS, and we heard you! For the first time, we’ll be offering a musical theatre class for students who would like to develop the skills to sing, dance, and perform onstage.

“It’s giving dance students the pathway to becoming a triple threat,” Saskia said. “It’s giving them the opportunity to incorporate their dance technique into their acting skills.”

If you’re interested in the class, we’ll be holding a Musical Theatre Intensive at our studio Aug. 9 through 11. Register for it here.

Fusion

One of the most important things for any dancer to learn is how to adapt quickly, and that’s exactly what our new Fusion class will teach them.

It’ll help intermediate and advanced students learn to pick up new material on the spot and gain practice in jazz, lyrical, and contemporary styles of dance. There’s no recital connected to it, so it’s all about training and education.

“The kids won’t know what they get until they walk in that day,” Saskia said. “It’s more about training the kids’ minds and bodies to pick up material quickly, and giving them the confidence to perform that material in front of their peers. They kind of dream on the dance floor for an hour every week.”

Placement is required for the Fusion class, so if you’re interested, please contact us for more information.

Prepare for the new season now

Although our classes start right after Labor Day, Saskia said there’s still plenty that dancers can be doing to get ready during the summer.

One of the best ways to stay active is to attend a dance summer camp, like our Preschool Boogie Camp for kids between the ages of 3 and 5.

“Summer dance camps are a great preparatory thing for kids to do,” she said. “It’s also a good way for us to get to know the kids before the fall and learn their skill sets.”

But if kids are just practicing at home, Saskia said that it’s important to stay motivated and get active at least two or three times each week.

“Take any opportunity to keep your stamina up, keep moving, and keep stretching,” she said. “Don’t stay stagnant. Don’t do nothing. We can all get rusty over the summer, so it’s a good idea to keep our bodies and minds in shape.”
