This is the only time dancers can audition for our performance and competition companies for the 2018-2019 season

Don’t miss your chance to be a part of our company during the upcoming dance season at ROOTS Academy!

We’ve got big things planned for this year, and we’re holding company auditions for dancers of all ages on Saturday, July 21.

This is the only time dancers can try out for our 2018-2019 company programs, so register now!

Please keep in mind that all dancers who are auditioning for company need to first attend our summer Intensive from July 16 to 20. Register for the Intensive here.

We’ll be holding auditions for our performance and competition companies, and if you aren’t sure which one is for you, take a look below.

Performance Company

This is an excellent chance for any dancers who want quality training without a competitive mentality, or for dancers who need a little more training before they take the leap into competitive dance. We’re looking for dancers who are:

  • Eager for higher-level training
  • Ready to join a community with our team of mentors and other students
  • Looking for opportunities to perform for an audience

Ideally, dancers in the performance company should already have one or two years of experience.

Competition Company

This is for dancers with a little more of a competitive edge. Our competition teams will compete at three to four local competitions during the season, attend one or two conventions, and perform at community events, so we want dancers who are:

  • Talented and driven
  • Eager to be challenged and grow
  • Have grit and determination for the world of competitive dance
  • Willing to dedicate time and energy to training for competition

There are more time commitments and financial obligations for the competition company than there are for the performance company, but you can learn more about the competition program here.

So what should you expect at the auditions? Our new dance program director Saskia Harmon has the lowdown.

“Each age group will perform a series of across the floor combinations including turns, leaps and stylized movements,” she said. “Then, they will learn a contemporary jazz combo that will be performed in smaller groups.”

Saskia also has a helpful tip for anyone auditioning.

“Any audition you attend, you should really come prepared to learn any style of dance,” she said. You never know what’s going to be thrown at you!”

Dancers can wear form-fitting dance apparel and hair must be pulled up. We suggest wearing pirouette shoes, but you can also come prepared with shoes for other types of dance styles.

Audition Schedule

All company auditions take place on Saturday, July 21 at ROOTS Academy on Southgate Court in Brentwood.

  • Minis (ages 8 and younger) – 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • Juniors (ages 9 to 11) – 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • Teens (ages 12 to 14) – 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Seniors (ages 15 and older) 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

We’ll make our selections the weekend after auditions and announce who made the cut on Monday, July 23. The number of dancers we accept will depend on the routine and age group.

It’s free to register for the auditions, however, there is a cost to attend the mandatory Intensive that takes place the week before.

But Saskia said that attending the Intensive is the first step to a great audition.

“Sometimes over the summer, we get a little rusty, so dancing as much as you can, stretching, and keeping your body in the best shape possible before an audition is key,” she said. “That way, when you walk into the room to audition, you exude confidence and are able to dance to the best of your ability.”

But time is running out! Register for the Intensive and sign up to audition now!
