ROOTS welcomes its newest piano mentor, Anna Yarbrough!
Anna Yarbrough (piano) is a musician and songwriter from Belfast, Northern Ireland. She began playing at only 3 years old, and this quickly bloomed into a lifelong passion.
She completed her Bachelor of Music degree at the Queen’s University of Belfast in Northern Ireland, where she trained under Michael McGuffin, one of the most notable pianists in Northern Irish music.
Upon graduating University, Anna left for Australia in her early 20s to attend Hillsong International Leadership College. She says, “I had begun to lead worship at different churches and events, and it became clear to me that it was not only a huge passion, but something I needed to invest in and be properly equipped for.”
While at Hillsong, she studied worship ministry and songwriting. “It was a time in my life of very fast and thorough growth. I met the most incredible people and had the absolute honor of playing music with the Hillsong team.” She played piano for Hillsong City Campus services in Sydney, learning from members of the Hillsong Worship team and guest worship leaders such as Israel Houghton and Kari Jobe.
Anna and her husband moved to the States at the end of 2013, where they lived in Florida. While there, Anna completed songwriting courses with Berklee College of Music online, and developed her writing style. At the start of 2015, she and her husband made the move to Nashville. “I was drawn to the rich songwriting community here in Nashville. I wanted to be where the songs were born and learn from the best.”
Anna loves to challenge and encourage her students. ”I want to create the most positive environment I can for my students. I’m so passionate about pulling out the gold from those I teach. In my experience, those who are deeply encouraged and cheered on are those who develop the most self-confidence in themselves as artists.” Her teaching style focuses on excellent technique and foundation, first and foremost. She says, “I teach a lot of classical principles, because I believe they are the absolute best foundation. From there, anything goes. It’s about finding what you love.” Anna teaches primarily classical, contemporary and worship music.
Anna is currently writing for others here in Nashville, honing her craft and working towards resourcing the church.
