Piano lessons are considered foundational to any musical path, as learning to read music opens up the door to studying other instruments. But the benefits don’t stop there.
Piano Lessons: An Essential Learning Tool
In one of the largest scientific studies to date, researchers found music lessons “doesn’t just affect your musical ability — it provides tremendous benefits to children’s emotional and behavioral maturation,” according to Mic.com.
“What we found was the more a child trained on an instrument, it accelerated cortical organization in attention skill, anxiety management and emotional control,” James Hudziak, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont and director of the Vermont Center for Children, Youth and Families, told The Washington Post.
It can make you smarter, too. Professor E. Glenn Schellenberg, of the University of Toronto at Mississauga, published a study in the August issue of Psychological Science showing an IQ boost in kids who took either piano or voice lessons. It’s been shown to improve verbal skills and increasing rates of learning and improving behavior, even among those with challenges.
Some say the mounting evidence of the benefits of high-quality music education may be one of the most effective ways to ensure success in life.
“My 12-year-old has been taking piano lessons at ROOTS for a few years now and she absolutely loves it! Her teacher is so nurturing and has been great at building self-confidence in our daughter at the keyboard. I love the mix of classical training with practical, everyday chord reading. At this age, I think the most important thing is for your child to truly love playing their instrument. That has happened for us at ROOTS! I highly recommend it.” –David Breen
